Principles Of Barrel Racing

Futurity barrel horse trainer Caroline Boucher coaches horses through their first years of training and competition. This series shows you horses from their very first time on the pattern to horses that are actively competing. Caroline believes in the importance of developing a strong feel and solid basics. She focuses on becoming a team with every horse, preserving their natural style, having them work by themselves around the barrels and keeping them happy. Her goal is to train horses that other people can ride after her and have long careers. She loves to share her knowledge with others. 

About the Trainer

Caroline Boucher

Native from Quebec, Canada, Caroline started her journey in English riding, where she developed her feel of the horse and learned fundamentals. At 11 years old, she discovered barrel racing and then was hooked on the discipline. Until 2014, she had a full-time job and was training her own horses, coaching and giving clinics on the side. In Canada, she won and placed at multiple futurities, derbies and rodeos aboard horses that she mostly trained herself. In 2015, her and her husband Olivier bought their ranch in Canada and offered boarding, training and coaching and, she started to compete in the USA in 2016. In 2023, Caroline and Oliver sold their ranch in Canada and moved permanently to Texas. Ashley works to soften three year old Toby prior to working on the barrels. She then talks through keeping frame and shoulders elevated while working the barrels.
Ashley uses three year old Shania, by Streakin Boon Dox, to talk about her process of warming up her horses and the exercises she uses prior to working the barrels. Ashley also explains how gaining lateral flexion and body control during the warmup is crucial to working the barrels.
Ashley uses three year old Swoon, by Dash Ta Fame, to further talk about how she uses her warm ups to gain softness and lateral flexion prior to working the barrels. She also demonstrates a four corners exercise she uses to work on straight lines and elevating the horse's shoulder while turning in smaller circles. Ashley later on goes to working on body position while working the barrels.
Ashley uses Buzz, a three year old by Dash Ta Fame, to talk about consistency in horse training, and how the warmup can depict what areas need to be focused and worked on during the ride. Ashley later goes on to talk about the importance of teaching a horse to be confident in their softness and foot and body placement so that they aren't reliant on being micromanaged by their rider.
Ashley uses Chip, a four year old by Dash Ta Fame, to talk about how to warm up a horse who requires more patience. After going through her warmup exercises, Ashley works on the barrels while keeping Chip patient, confident, and quiet.
Ashley uses Flame, a four year old gelding by Darkelly, to demonstrate how she warms up and softens a fresh reactive horse. After her warmup, Ashley works on keeping Flame patient and soft while working through the barrels.
Ashley runs through her warmup exercises on Esther, a four year old mare by Streakin Boon Dox. She focuses on riding Esther into the bridle and talks about how a riders hand position and release of pressure is crucial for teaching head frame and softness. Ashley later goes on to talk about a rider's body position and weight distribution when approaching the barrels.
After a good warmup, Ashley and Chip work on body softness and reiterating that Chip's shoulders need to stay up while circling. Ashley also talks about how horses are individuals, and it's a trainers job to make each horse as confident and effective as their body and abilities allow.
After a good warmup, Ashley works to step up Shania's barrel pattern by adding some speed.
Ashley introduces Derby, a three year old filly by Freckles to Fame out of KR Last Fling. She demonstrates a few different exercises she uses to keep a horse framed up around her leg and the hind end engaged around the barrel.
Ashley uses Cody, a four year old mare by A Streak of Fling, to explain and demonstrate how draw reins can be used to help soften a horse that tends to be bracey in their face.
Ashley uses Albany, a three year old filly by Freckles to Flame, to demonstrate a versatile exercise called the four barrel drill. In this episode, she uses the drill to work on consistent circles and leads around the barrels.
