Ground Work

Follow a variety of horses through their initial rides. This series is completely raw and unedited; we don’t remove the bumps. Colt starting, even on the smoothest days, never goes as planned. Dusty Whitford shows you how to overcome each training obstacle to put on the most important rides in a horse’s career. The first ride is the most important, followed by the second.

About the Trainer

Dusty Whitford

Dusty Whitford (Glen Rose, Texas) has been a professional colt starter for 25 years. He has developed a system for starting colts that eliminates human answers and relies on answers that come from the way horses think. 6 years ago he began working for Hall of Fame trainers and began his career as a cutting and cow horse specialist. He has since seen finalists from his program in many major futurities. “Forward motion is the answer to 99% of Colt starting problems” -Dusty

Crash continues to show how good-minded he is, especially for a barrel-bred horse. Dusty demonstrates how he introduces a surcingle and then his colt starting saddle.
Dusty puts the last day of groundwork on Crash and shows how he uses a second lunge line on the back cinch to help a colt that bucks find a release.
Dusty introduces Xena, a two year old cutting prospect with a ton of potential. She is just barely halter broke and very feely.
Xena, a One Time Royalty, has been saddled 5 or 6 times and has bucked. She is very feely and smart.
Xena is starting to settle in, but she's still a little wild. Dusty shows how he using bitting a horse up to work on getting them more even through their ribs.
Luna, a ranch horse who just came off her mother, gets her second work. She tends to rear and Dusty shares his technique for dealing with that behavior.
