Jim Greendyk

Jim Greendyk has earned his reputation as one of Western Canada’s most successful riders, trainers and coaches of Reining Horses with a proven record of successfully competing in both Canada and the USA. In addition, Jim has the trust of International Clients from European countries who choose to leave their horses in Jim’s care to train and show.
As an Open Rider since the age of 20, Jim’s talent, tenacity, and adaptability in the show pen has brought him a successful training program.
Always ready to learn from others, Jim has and continues to ride with some of the industry’s best trainers in order to further his knowledge year by year. Jim expects a very high standard of performance from himself and his horses and has a timing and balance that has allowed him to rise quickly and consistently over the years to become one of the top reining trainers in Western Canada, achieving success on Arabs, Half Arabs and Quarter Horses. Since his start in the Porcupine Hills of Southern Alberta, he has taken everything that anyone has ever taught him and elevated it to the next level to move himself and his horses up through the industry.

Jim will be sharing the horse's in his program throughout 2024, including horses in their futurity year. A couple horses are greener and behind other horses, which makes them underdogs on the journey to the show pen.
Patriot is a 3 year old colt by Shining Gun that came to Jim in 2024. He is headed towards the reining futurities but is a little more green than other horses at this time of the year. Patriot has a little bit of a thicker neck and shoulders and a lot of focus in the beginning is on breaking him loose and steering.
Rita is a 3 year old that was started later in the two year old year and came to Jim last fall. She is a quick footed and physical horse that Jim enjoys riding. While there's no set in stone goals for her, Jim is excited to bring her along this futurity year.
Jim introduces Rita, a 3 year old that is a little behind in training and shows how he works on getting her to relax and be smooth when loping, trotting and transitioning. She is a horse that is fast footed and tends to jump into the lope departure.
Jim introduces and Patriot and works on steering and breaking the shoulders loose to help with steering.
Jim uses cones in a drill to help gain control and softness on each side of Patriot's body individually to help with steering and moving his body when taking a hold of his face.
Jim demonstrates an exercise he uses to help with softness, guiding and helping ahorse to stay on a circle comfortably.
Jim works on sterring and circling with Rita and has to work through a little sassiness when she has to get collected and steering through some cones.
Jim works through getting Rita's body soft to his legs and hands.
Jim works on loping off Rita and getting comfortable steering at the lope.
Jim demonstrates an exercise he uses to help horses not anticipate the lead change. This can also help a horse to be patient and wait on you. By the end of the work, the horse he uses smooths out and relaxes.

Jim updates us on Rita after hauling her a little bit. He works on loping and counter cantering.
